Explore books, gifts, and guided tours that bring Detroit’s Black history and Christian heritage to life for visitors.
In 2000, a vision took root inside a tiny closet. Dr. Nathaniel “Papa” Leach dreamed of a place where Detroit’s Black history would be recognized. With Bobbie Fowlkes Davis, they established a gift shop for tour guests.
Today, that 100-square-foot dream is a 200-square-foot testament to faith and resilience.
We stand on the original Underground Railroad stop, a living museum staffed by guides. We honor Papa Leach and Mrs. Rosa Parks, two Alabama natives whose parallel lives remind us that every story matters. UGRR is more than a store; it is a sacred space!
Discover Christian titles, historical works, and new releases that celebrate faith, freedom, and Detroit’s powerful heritage.
Step inside Second Baptist Church, explore hidden passages, and hear powerful stories of freedom seekers who found refuge here before crossing into Canada toward lasting liberty.
We offer special books and activities to help children connect with the past in a joyful and meaningful way.
Planning your visit should be easy. Find answers to common questions about group sizes, tours, and donations below.
Groups usually range from 4 to 40. Smaller groups or individuals can often join scheduled tours. Larger groups may require extra time, as the Croghan Street Station only seats 40 at once.
That depends on which tour you select. Second Baptist Church spans three connected buildings: the Educational Building, German Building, and Annex Building.
No need. Plans sometimes change, and donations are non-refundable. It’s best to bring your contribution when you arrive.
